Northamptonshire Conscription Appeals Index
An index to appeals by Northamptonshire men for exemption from military service has recently been launched on the FindMyPast website. The appeals were made to the Military Tribunals for the county during the period 1916-1918.
The index transcribes the original case file, capturing the person's name, age, residence and occupation, grounds for appeal, outcome and date. However, it does not feature images of the original documents. These are kept at Northamptonshire Record Office, in boxes whose numbers also appear in the index.
An introduction to the records states that about 12,000 case records appear in the collection. However, checking the index for all its entries reveals that the total number of names comes to 14,594. The reason for the discrepancy is probably that men in certain occupations could be given a temporary exemption. Each time this was renewed a fresh case would be generated.
